Catching

There's a lot more to the catcher’s position than most people realize. Whether you are new to the position or have played it all your life, personal instruction at Rijo will make you a more successful catcher.

Here are just some of the skills covered in catching instruction:

The Three Stances. Catchers must be fully in command with each of the three stances: Signal-Giving, Receiving, and Blocking/Throwing. In Signal-Giving, the number-one duty is to communicate with the pitcher – and to do so with authority. The Receiving stance, used with no one on base and less than two strikes, requires you to make it easy for the pitcher while being extremely consistent in your position and allowing the umpire to get the best look at the pitch. In the Blocking/Throwing stance, you must quickly stop and transfer the ball, which requires precision positioning and movement. Several drills are taught to reinforce the stances and skills, including tennis ball soft toss, framing, three-ball drill, shadow-off voice, and jugs machine/live reps.

Pre-Game Stretching. Proper stretching and flexibility are especially crucial for catchers. We teach our students stretching exercises and routines that will increase their comfort and reduce the chances of injury.

Instruction for First-Time Catchers. For young players with no experience with catching, we can show them the basics and help them quickly determine whether catching is the right position for them. New catchers will learn how to properly wear and use the catcher’s gear for maximum safety and effectiveness. For the new catcher, there is no greater advantage than being taught by a pro and developing the best habits from a young age.

Taking Experienced Catchers from Good to Great. Our professionally experienced catching coaches can teach players what they need to know to go from good to great – from framing to blocking, and from pop time to throw-downs. We’ll make them experts on defensive communications, and teach them how to command the game.
